Santa Barbara paper turns over stabbing photos

The Santa Barbara Daily Sound has turned Monday over 144 unpublished photographs taken during a gang fight that ended in the stabbing death of a teenager.

The paper's editor and publisher, Jeramy Gordon, turned the March 14 photos over to Superior Court, calling it “a sad day for journalism and for our rights as Americans.”

Judge Brian Hill ordered the photos be handed over early last week, according to an Associated Press report. Deputy Public Defender Karen Atkins, representing the 14-year-old charged in the killing, requested the photos be handed over in a petition that was filed under seal.

Gordon said the photos by co-publisher Charles Swegles do not show anything that hasn't already been published. Luis Angel Linares, 15, was stabbed to death in the daytime street fight.

“This newspaper was singled out because Deputy Public Defender Karen Atkins knew we didn't have the resources to fight her fishing expedition,” Gordon said in a statement.
