Newspaper Web site traffic has slowed down in July, according to an analysis by Wachovia Equity Research analyst John Janedis using comScore data for newspapers in its coverage area.
Janedis found that The New York Times Co., including About.com, did the best, with a 12 percent growth in unique users from last year. USA Today traffic fell three percent from last year.
The Times' strength came mostly from About.com, which saw unique uswers up 13.2 percent over last year. The company's flagship newspaper's site nytimes.com's July traffic was down 6.9 percent year-over-year, Editor & Publisher reported.
The Wall Street Journal's wsj.com saw a 14.6 rise in unique users, but overall Dow Jones was down 8.9 percent. The weakness came from Ottaway newspapers and MarketWatch, each of which were down about 21 percent, E&P stated in an article.
Janedis also said that since the acquisition of Knight Ridder, July was the first comparable month for McClatchy, with weak trends seeing uniques for the company down 15.7 percent.
