Reuters admits Titanic gaffe

Reuters has admitted that footage it released last week showing Russian submersibles on the North Pole's seabed was actually from the movie Titanic.

The images were seen around the world, alongside an article about Russia planting its flag below the North Pole on Aug. 2.

After a 13-year-old Finnish boy contacted a local newspaper saying the images looked identical to those used in James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster about the 1912 disaster, the news agency admitted the footage actually showed two Finnish-made Mir submersibles employed on location filming at the scene of the RMS Titanic wreck in the north Atlantic, Media Guardian reported.

Reuters said it took the images from RTR, the Russian state television channel, and accidentally captioned them as file footage of the Arctic. RTR also used the footage to illustrate the North Pole expedition, but never claimed it was actually the flag-planting. RTR first broadcast the pictures when the Russians were still several hours away from the North Pole, according to Media Guardian.

“This location error was corrected as soon as it was brought to our attention. A still image of the submersibles was also taken from the footage and put out on the Reuters photo wire. The caption has been corrected,” Reuters is quoted as saying in a statement by Media Guardian.
