Berlingske Officin may merge two newsrooms

Danish publisher Berlingske Officin is considering merging the newsrooms of free daily Urban and tabloid B.T., Newspaper Innovation reported Tuesday.

Urban already merged with the home delivered, free daily Dato earlier this year.

The continued merging may be another indication of problems the freesheet war in Denmark has caused. Before three home delivered free dailies were introduced in the second half of 2006, Metro was making a profit and Urban was getting closer to breaking even, Newspaper Innovation reported.

Berlingske Officin, owned by Mecom, is Denmark's largest newspaper publishing group. It is the parent company of 14 daily newspapers and nearly 50 local newspapers on Sealand and in Juland.
