New Polish daily will hit newsstands next week

Polskapresse will launch new daily newspaper Polska Oct. 15, six days before Poland votes in parliamentary elections, the publisher announced Monday.

Polska (Poland) will compete in a tightly competitive news market alongside other dailies, namely Agora's Gazeta Wyborcza, Axel Springer's Dziennik and Presspublica's Rzeczpospolita.

Polskapresse company spokeswoman Magdalena Chudzikiewicz declined to give initial circulation numbers or other details before the paper officially launches next week, but did say the paper will include some editorial content from The Times of London, which will be translated to Polish, the Associated Press reported, according to an article posted by The International Herald Tribune.

Since the fall of communism in 1989, Poland has seen an boom of news publications, the first of which was Gazeta Wyborcza. Dziennik launched in April 2006 but has seen a decline in sales, while mid-market newspaper Nowy Dzien hit newsstands in February 2005, but closed after three months because of low sales.

Polskapresse is a subsidiary of the German-based international concern Verlagsgruppe Passau GmbH.
