Luxembourg and Ukraine gain free dailies

Luxembourg's first free daily was launched Wednesday, as free Ukranian daily 15 Minut launched three more editions in Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Lviv, Newspaper Innovation reported.

L'Essentiel, in Luxembourg, brings the number of European countries with free dailies to 32, and circulation to more than 28 million.

Published by Edita, L'Essentiel is a micro-sized paper with a circulation of 60,000. Edita is a joint venture between Swiss publisher Tamedia (20 Minuten) and Luxembourg publishing house Editpress (Das Tageblatt), Newspaper Innovation reported.

In Ukraine, 15 Minut launched in Kiev in July of 2006, with editions in Odessa and Donetsk launched by KP Media earlier in 2007. In Kiev, circulation is now at 180,000, while 15 Minut's total circulation is 270,000, according to Newspaper Innovation.

15 Minut's Lviv edition is published in Ukrainian, while in other markets, it is published in Russian.

There are now free dailies in 53 countries in the world, with a total circulation of 42 million.
