Dun Laoghaire Express hits south Dublin

The third edition of a new local newspaper has launched in one of Dublin's southern districts, aiming to offer readers there more localised content.

The weekly Dun Laoghaire Express will be published weekly and costs €1.50.

Chris Macey, the paper's editor, and three of his former co-workers at the Rehab Group, a non-profit organisation working for people with disabilities, thought up the idea for the newspaper. Macey, a former journalist with the Irish Press Group, said he was amazed that the citizens of Dun Laoghaire didn't have easy access to news on what was happening in their community, even in this age of instant news from around the world.

“In fact, it's sometimes easier to find out what's going on in the Green Zone in Baghdad than in our local council,” he said in the newspaper's opening editorial, according to the Sunday Business Post.

Dun Laoghaire Express, launched October 19, will offer readers more localised content by covering community issues, reporting on city council decisions, planning matters, local court cases, business, education and sport.

For the launch issue, 15,000 copies were printed, 10,000 of which were given away for free. For the second edition, 10,000 copies were printed.
