La Tribune: 'Economic press in danger'

French business daily La Tribune Wednesday on its front page accused its owner, luxury goods group LVMH and its chief executive and chairman Bernard Arnault, of putting “The economic press in danger,” its top headline stated.

The newspaper's journalists argued that Arnault “cannot define without checks the new outlook of the French economic press,” MediaGuardian reported.

On Monday, LVMH bought Les Echos, La Tribune's only competitor and France's top business daily, from Pearson Plc, which owns the Financial Times. LVMH must sell La Tribune in order to own Les Echos, due to French competition rules.

La Tribune staffers stated on its front page Wednesday that one of their major concerns is that LVMH will not find the best prospective buyer, an unfair advantage in being able to pick who the group's new title will compete with. “These offers do not provide enough editorial, social and economic guarantees,” the journalists stated, according to MediaGuardian.

Four official candidates are looking at La Tribune, including radio station founder Alain Weill and Cyril Zimmerman, the head of online advertising group Hi-Media.

Wednesday's front page is the second time in less than three weeks that La Tribune staffers have directly addressed Arnault. The paper's top headline October 22 stated “Mr. Arnault, let's divorce with dignity.”
