USA Today plans to eliminate 45 newsroom jobs, almost 9 percent

USA Today Thursday announced plans to cut about 45 newsroom jobs.

The cut will impact almost nine percent of a current newsroom staff of about 500, according to USA Today spokeswoman Alexandra Nicholson. Cuts will be scattered throughout news, money, sports and lifestyle sections.

Ken Paulson, USA Today Editor, said in a memo to staff that “the paper hopes to reduce the staff through voluntary buyouts, but layoffs are possible.”

"It's unfortunate that we have to take these steps, particularly when our newspaper circulation is growing," Paulson added. "Unfortunately, revenue has not kept pace and we're now facing the same cutbacks that so many other news organisations have already experienced."

Just like other newspapers, USA Today, the highest circulation newspaper in the United States and the flagship of industry leader Gannett Co., has struggled with recessing revenue due to the print ad shift to the Internet. So far this year, the paper has marked quarterly revenue decline ranging from one to eight percent.

Unlike other papers, though, circulation numbers of USA Today have held strong. According to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, USA Today was one of only three papers in the nation to report circulation increases in the last six months, along with the Los Angeles Times and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Its parent company, Gannett, has the shares slipping 62 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $39.73 Thursday, the International Herald Tribune reported.
