Korea's LG Telecom forges closer partnership with Yahoo

Korea's LG Telecom Wednesday said its mobile phones will feature Yahoo's Internet search window on the idle screen from next summer.

The company said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Yahoo Korea. With this new feature aimed to make the mobile Internet easier and faster to use, users can type keywords such as "weather" or "stock" on the initial screen before they connect to the mobile Internet site.

Currently, users need to access each carrier's mobile Internet homepage to use search engines or check e-mails, which usually takes five to 30 seconds.

"We are trying to deliver the same Internet services on PCs to mobile phones, by simplifying the access process and reshaping them for the mobile environment," said Kim Yong-soo, chief of Yahoo Korea's mobile business team, according to AsiaMedia.

LG Telecom and Yahoo Korea have been in a close partnership in the mobile Internet business since this summer, when Yahoo's OneSearch service was selected as the default for LG Telecom phones. Two other mobile carriers, SK Telecom and KTF, allow users to select from among multiple search engines, including Naver, Daum and Yahoo.

In the meantime, LG Telecom also announced it may introduce Korea's first full-browsing Internet phone as early as next spring, AsiaMedia reported.
