First South African blogger fired for blog's content will appeal dismissal

The first South African blogger to be fired for what he wrote in his blog will appeal the findings of the disciplinary hearing that led to his dismissal.

Llewellyn Kriel was fired last week for leaking “confidential corporate information” on his Mail & Guardian's Thought Leader blog, when he referred to an internal memorandum to staff, informing them that “all new appointments had been banned,” AllAfrica.com reported Saturday.

Kriel claims his termination was unconstitutional.

“I am passionate about freedom of expression and I was exercising my constitutional right when I posted the blog ... I certainly did not intend to offend any of my colleagues,” said Kriel, according to AllAfrica.com. “Media in South Africa need to wake up quickly, there is an entirely new face to the media worldwide, influenced by cyberspace.”
