China's youku.com approaches YouTube territory

Youku.com, China's biggest video sharing site, is approaching some records made by the world's largest video sharing site, YouTube.

Youku.com said Wednesday morning it has passed two significant milestones, including registering over 100 million daily video views during the week ending December 16, 2007. Youku had more than 12 million daily visitors in that week, according to Nielsen Online's Nielsen/NetRatings unit. That is 20-fold growth for the one-year-old video sharing site, and indicates a great increase of 30 million daily video views since last October.

The world leading video sharing site, YouTube, however, had only exceeded the 100 million daily video views milestone in October 2006, the month it was acquired by Google.

The data should endorse Youku.com as the "YouTube of China," as Chinese officials are clamping down on video sharing sites not sanctioned by the government, aimed to prevent the exchange of pornography and political dissent online, Media Post reported.

Key Western advertisers and agencies have been focusing their attention on the Chinese marketplace, and Youku.com just completed three rounds of venture with US $40 million value in total.
