The Times to be sold on newsstands in Gauteng province

The Times will be sold on newsstands in parts of South Africa's Gauteng province beginning in mid-February.

The sister publication of The Sunday Times is delivered daily to about 126,000 Sunday Times subscribers for free, and is expected to retail at R3.50 (about € 0.34) on newsstands, Business Day reported.

“We hope that others will buy the paper, enjoy it and join the subscriber family,” Times Editor Ray Hartley wrote in his blog, according to Business Day.

The Times is published by Avusa, which also owns the Sunday Times and half of Business Day.

The Times has been bundling advertising with Sunday Times advertising deals, media buyers told Business Day. The move to newsstands means the newspaper will become a standalone and have to recoup its costs by increasing readership.

Overall, media buyers told Business Day that the move makes sense, and will mean a wider readership base and an increase in advertisers' interest.
