In its latest round of layoffs to combat “rapidly declining revenue,” due to advertising and circulation declines, the Minneapolis Star Tribune will cut 58 positions and freeze the wages of non-union employees.

About three percent of the staff will be cut, as well as seven additional photo-imaging employees, the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal reported Monday.

Company spokesman Ben Taylor said the Newspaper Guild and Graphics Communications International Union has been notified of the photo employees' layoff, the Business Journal reported.

The newspaper's circulation department is the hardest hit, with 75 percent of its positions being cut. Other cuts are in finance, human resources, marketing and operations departments. News and advertising departments are not being affected.

The newspaper hired Washington-based consulting firm Restructuring Associated Inc. in January to help deal with “rapidly declining revenue,” according to the Business Journal.

“As we are taking these actions, I want be clear that the cuts we are announcing today have nothing to do with the Restructuring Associates project, which is just beginning. The RAI consultants are working with our managers to prepare a presentation on the state of our company, designed to give all our employees a better sense of what we are up against. I realize we are making some far-reaching decisions without everyone fully understanding why we must take these steps,” Chairman Chris Harte wrote to employees Monday, according to the Business Journal.
