Baltimore Sun launches free daily tabloid

The Baltimore Sun Media Group will launch a free daily tabloid and Web site targeting young adults, which will focus on news, sports, pop culture, entertainment and night life, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.

The new free daily, to be called b, and Web site, bthesite.com, will target younger readers, ages 18-to-34-years-old. The newspaper will also publish content from other publications, including Chicago free daily RedEye, both of which are owned by Tribune Co.

b will be published every weekday and distributed in newspaper boxes, on college campuses and at restaurants, bars and coffee shops. An initial print run will be 50,000 copies daily, and will double to 100,000 by the end of the year, according to The Sun, also owned by the Baltimore Sun Media Group.

“We believe there's an unserved market segment there, a print and companion Web site to reach young adults in the Baltimore market, and we intend to fill that need by launching b and bthesite.com,” Timothy J. Thomas, Baltimore Sun vice president of business development told The Sun. “This approach has worked very successfully in other markets.”

The new Baltimore paper will follow in the footsteps of RedEye, which helped The Chicago Tribune's overall ad revenue by attracting smaller advertisers and new readers, according to The Sun.

b will have a staff of more than 20, and will be based in the offices of The Sun's Baltimore County bureau.
