The Glasgow Evening Times has launched 12 community Web sites today, a first wave that is planned to finish when a total of 80 community sites are up by the end of the year, covering every district in the city, HoldtheFrontPage reported Tuesday.
All of the sites will be built under the Evening Times brand, but each will be tailored for coverage on its specific district.
Each of the individual community sites aims to cover its district with unbeatable local coverage, detailing the latest news, and providing information on events, cultural attractions, schools, doctors and more. The Evening Times, owned by Newsquest, will hire local correspondents to run the sites, and pay “tip-off fees for items which make the paper,” according to HoldtheFrontPage.
The sites will encourage readers to comment on stories, contribute information on events, clubs and organisations, and upload photos and videos. Organisations, such as youth groups, are also being invited to set up their own mini sites, under the umbrella of the local sites.
“No newspaper in the UK has done anything like this in such wide-ranging detail. It's a massive investment in community news and we're delighted to be involved with our readers both in print and now online,” said Donald Martin, Evening Times editor, according to HoldtheFrontPage.
Content from the sites will be moderated by Helen Smith, community news editor of the Evening Times. Smith will also repackage relevant content from the newspaper for the sites.
The first 12 sites, launched today, cover Cardonald, Dennistoun, Easterhouse, Gorbals, Hillhead, Maryhill, Partick, Robroyston, Shawlands, Springburn, Tollcross and Whiteinch. The Web site for each is the area's name, followed by .eveningtimes.co.uk (for example, cardonald.eveningtimes.co.uk).
