UK weeklies may close

The future of two weekly newspapers in southeast England is uncertain after the Kent Messenger Group exposed plans to close the titles, HoldtheFrontPage reported Friday.

A 30-day consultation process between staff of the free Bromley Extra and Bexley Extra and management is under way, in order to determine the possible future of the titles.

“The proposal is that the two titles should be closed – they are both loss-making,” said Chris Bisco, managing director, according to HoldtheFrontPage. “There are just over 30 people potentially affected who have to be consulted with.”

The two titles were launched in 2004 and are part of the 17 group-wide Extra titles. They have merged audited distribution of about 167,000.

“There's plenty of scope for the majority of people to move elsewhere in the company,” HoldtheFrontPage reported.
