Le Monde journalists strike over staff cuts

Le Monde journalists went on strike Monday for the second time the newspaper's history to protest 130 staff cuts in newsroom positions, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Like other newspapers worldwide, the influential French newspaper has been struggling with rising costs and declining advertising revenues, as well as online competition.

This is the first time Le Monde's journalists have gone on strike since 1976, as well as the first time they have gone on strike to protest something happening within their own newspaper, according to the Reuters article, posted by The Peninsula.

The strike stopped Tuesday's edition from hitting newsstands.

With a goal of eliminating losses by 2009 and bringing in a profit in 2010, the newspaper's management team “told staff earlier this month that the Le Monde group would have to sell a number of titles, including its renowned film journal Cahiers du Cinema and cut 130 staff at the flagship daily, including a quarter of its 340 journalists,” Reuters reported.
