Seoul's free afternoon paper celebrates 1 year

Seoul's first free afternoon paper celebrated its first year in business last week, Newspaper Innovation reported Thursday.

The City has a circulation of 400,000, while total circulation of free newspapers in Seoul is about two million.

The City targets a slightly different audience than other free dailies in the area, due to it afternoon distribution time, and is meant to be taken home and read by more than one family member, Newspaper Innovation reported.

Seoul has eight free dailies, the last of which, free sports daily Sport Dong-A, launched in March.

Metro launched in 2002 in Seoul, and in 2003, Daily Focus and AM7 started. In 2004, Daily Zoom, Good Morning Seoul and Sports Hankook began. Good Morning Seoul folded after a year.

In 2006, Daily NoCutNews launched, and The City and IlIlKyungje, an economic paper, debuted in 2007; however, IlIlKyungje folded several months later, Newspaper Innovation reported.
