Daily Mail to expand online internationally

The Daily Mail may expand its online international presence through a new Web site in India, the Daily Mail and General Trust board chairman announced, Journalism.co.uk reported Tuesday.

Lord Rothermere said the paper might launch the Indian Web site to profit on the Daily Mail's “global potential,” and would build on existing partnerships with the Washington Post and Today Media in India.

“We believe we are going to have to invest in that area (international expansion) and there is a huge opportunity for us in the global sphere,” said Rothermere, Journalism.co.uk reported.

In October, Martin Clarke, the newspaper's online editorial director, said the publication was looking to expand its commercial focus in order to better monetize its large international readership, Journalism.co.uk reported.

“For relatively little extra cost, we can grow our unique user base quite substantially,” Rothermere said, according to Journalism.co.uk.

Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe) figures from last July show a considerable international audience for the Mail. Seventy-eight percent of its unique users come from outside the UK.
