Walmart launches classified listings

Walmart is now testing a classified listings service on its Web site, according to Tech Crunch.

This service is powered by a 2004 start-up, Oodle.

By launching this free service, Walmart would like to generate more page views and advertising impressions on its sites.

Walmart has a mixed history of success online. Based on comScore's data, Walmart.com attracts 26 million visitors a month in the U.S., while Amazon attracts 47 million.

The classifieds listing was launched quietly at the end of May on Walmart's site, Tech Crunch reported.

The deal should help Oodle compete against eBay's Kijiji, which reportedly had two million visitors in April, versus 1.3 million for Oodle. Both lagged behind Craigslist, which has 30 million unique visitors, and is under a lawsuit with eBay over Kijiji's entry into the United States.
