Newspaper networks surpass Google News in unique traffic

Several newspaper networks netted more unique traffic than Google News in May, Nielsen Online data shows, Editor & Publisher reported Wednesday.

Yahoo News had 35.8 million unique monthly visitors, beating out Google News, which had 11.36 million. NYTimes.com also beat the online giant, with 21.3 million uniques.

Gannett newspapers, with 14.63 million uniques, and Tribune newspapers, with 16.24 million, when counted as an entire group instead of individual newspaper, also had more than Google, E&P reported.

Also beating Google were AOL News, with 22.52 million, CNN Digital Network, with 33.1 million, and MSNBC Digital Network, with 35.18 million unique monthly visitors in May.

ABC News Digital Network had more uniques than Google in May 2007, with 10.21 million to Google's 9.36 million, but ABC fell short of Google's unique monthly visitors in May 2008, with a close 11.12 million.
