Top U.S. newspaper Web sites gain unique users

Nearly every top 30 U.S. newspaper Web site, ranked by traffic, saw unique user numbers grow year-over-year, Editor & Publisher reported Thursday.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune saw traffic jump 136 percent from last year, while traffic at The Dallas Morning News increased 156 percent. The Star Tribune's traffic is now at 2.3 million unique users, while The Morning News is at 3.2 million.

Nielsen Online provided E&P with the custom list of top 30 U.S. newspaper sites, based on traffic.

The largest growth was at Politico, where traffic grew 262 percent, to 3.5 million unique users, from last year, E&P reported.

Others gaining big online included The New York Daily News, which saw unique user traffic rise 91 percent, to 4.3 million uniques, The New York Times, where traffic increased by 67 percent year-over-year, to 21.3 million, and the traffic at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rose 74 percent from last year, to 3.2 million uniques. The Chicago Tribune's traffic almost doubled from last year, to 4.4 million. The Detroit news also saw big gains, with traffic rising 91 percent, to nearly 1.8 million uniques, according to Nielsen data, E&P reported.

The Houston Chronicle maintained user numbers, but did not see any growth, at 3.4 million unique users.

Only three of the top 30 saw unique user numbers decrease: the San Francisco Chronicle, down 10 percent, to 3.3 million uniques; Azcentral.com, down seven percent, to 1.5 million; and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, down 12 percent, to 1.5 million, according to E&P.
