British Columbia daily adopts tabloid format

The North Thompson Times in British Columbia is the latest to adopt a tabloid format, as newspapers around the world switch from broadsheet formats to cut costs and make newspapers more easy to read, especially for commuters.

The British Columbia-based Times started out as a tabloid when it launched in 1964, but went broadsheet in 1977 when the paper began being printed by a press set up for a broadsheet, bclocalnews.com reported Monday.

Switching back to the tabloid format is beneficial in many ways, in that it is easier to hold and read than a broadsheet, it will have more pages, which means more colour photographs and features, and quicker, easier layout, said Al Kirkwood, publisher of The Times, according to bclocalnews.com.

The paper will continue to have the same number of column inches it had as a broadsheet, and content will not be changed, the site reported.
