Newsquest title to reduce two editions to one

The Argus, a Newsquest title based in Brighton, United Kingdom, plans to cut its two daily editions down to one, and close its weekly Sports Argus newspaper, threatening 10 editorial jobs, Holdthefrontpage.co.uk reported Tuesday.

The newspaper is currently in a 30-day consultation process with employees about the cuts.

Management is hoping for 10 voluntary redundancies in editorial, as well as several in other departments, such as advertising or sales, Don Mackglew, assistant organiser with the National Union of Journalists, told Holdthefrontpage.

Everything is being done “by the book,” he said.

The cuts are due to “the current economic climate,” Martyn Willis, managing director of Newsquest Sussex, said in a statement to Holdthefrontpage.
