AOL launches two niche sites for potential ad growth

America Online (AOL) on Tuesday launched new sites on personal finance and photography, in order to seek ad growth opportunities with certain niche audiences, the Associated Press reported.

The new WalletPop site, expanded based on the existing site of the same name, features latest deal alerts and money-saving tips, as well as answers to reader-submitted questions. Pixcetera, on the other hand, provides information about high-quality professional photography.

Like many other niche sites AOL launched recently, WalletPop and Pixcetera play down the AOL brand, according to the AP article posted on Yahoo News.

According to the AP, AOL has recently been trying to break down its one-size-fits-all model by creating scores of specialty sites, each with its own design and editorial tone. It showed the company's efforts to attract additional advertising revenues to offset its plummeting revenue from the shrinking base of online access subscribers.

Both sites will be free, the AP reported.

WalletPop is focusing on "the money matters of real people, such as debt management, finding the best deals, saving, retirement, insurance, mortgages, banking, taxes and more," said Marty Moe, an AOL senior vice president, according to the AP.

Pixcetera, however, is aimed to aggregate thousands of professional images across all AOL sites. It will also feature picture-taking tips and comments on trends in photography, according to the AP article.
