Irish-language paper launches in Brussels

A new Irish-language newspaper has launched in Brussels for the 15,000 Irish people living in Belgium, Waterford Today reported Wednesday.

The newspaper's name, Anam Beo, is derived from a quotation by Irish patriot Thomas Davis, “A country without its language is a country without its soul.”

Anam Beo will be published seven times a year so that they come out with Irish and Celtic feast days. Seventy percent of the paper's content will be written in Irish, 20 percent will be in English and 10 percent in the official languages in Belgium, French, German and Dutch, Waterford Today reported.

The paper was launched by Colm Burke and Jim Higgins, MEPs for the Fine Gael party.

The newspaper's launch is a “major leap forward for the language,” said Burke, according to Waterford Today.
