Newspaper-distributed magazines doing well

Magazines inserted in newspapers, such as weekend magazine supplements like USA Weekend, are doing well, “one of the weird paradoxes in current media trends,” MediaDailyNews reported Friday.

Although newspapers and consumer magazines are hurting in 2008, U.S. newspaper-distributed magazines are improving or seeing relatively small declines. Some leaders include American Profile, which saw a year-to-date ad pages increase of 12.58 percent, and Relish, which saw a 19.69 percent increase. Both are owned by the Publishing Group of America.

Other top magazines are USA Weekend and Parade, which are seeing minimal declines, MediaDailyNews reported.

Some trends helping newspaper-distributed magazines include newspapers reducing staff numbers, which has caused editors and publishers to up print offerings at little expense. Additionally, newspapers in smaller cities haven't been hurt as much as large metro newspapers by dropping circulation, said Dick Porter, president of Publishing Group of America, according to MediaDailyNews.

Newspapers also “benefit from the immediacy of newspaper content” and “accumulate the vast majority of their audience within a very short period, typically less than a week,” Porter told MediaDailyNews.
