Asian mobile subscriptions exceed 1.3 billion, half from China

Mobile subscriptions in the Asia Pacific region increased from less than 600 million in 2003 to over 1.3 billion in 2007, according to Informa Telecoms & Media.

In 2003, almost half of the market was dominated by China, while India only accounted for a niche amount. Other countries, including mobile-advanced Japan and South Korea, made up another half, according to SFN's World Digital Media Trends report 2008.

In 2007, China alone made up about 600 million subscriptions, still making up nearly half. The subscriptions in India and Pakistan, however, have boosted since 2003 and totalled about 200 million, according to Informa Telecoms & Media.

Other countries, including Japan and Korea, accounted for about 500 million in 2007, according to the WDMT report, published by the World Association of Newspapers.
