Dutch sports daily closes

The paid sports daily AD SportwereldPro, launched in the Netherlands on April 7 this year, will close down at the end of August, following the Beijing Olympics, according to Newspaper Innovation.

The paper was a sports spin-off from paid title AD.

The sports title started due to the numerous sports events this year, including Euro2008, Tour de France, Roland Garos, Wimbledon and the Olympics.

The management originally planned to end the paper after the Olympics, but after a successful launch with 50,000 daily circulations after two weeks, they had hoped the paper would continue production. Currently, the average circulation is around 100,000, Newspaper Innovation reported.

However, the reason for the closure was lack of advertising instead of lack of readers.

Recently, sports titles seem to have difficulty drawing in advertisers. There were several closures of free sports papers in Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal, Newspaper Innovation reported.
