Yahoo and Verizon extend Web portal deal

Yahoo and Verizon extend Web portal deal

Yahoo and Verizon have announced plans to extend their co-branded Web portal, which will be a homepage for new Verizon FIOS and high-speed Internet customers, Information Week reported.

According to the multi-year agreement, “a customisable Verizon-Yahoo Web portal would be offered as the preferred starting point for all of Verizon's new broadband Internet customers.”

The financial details or the length of the agreement has not been disclosed.

The services to those choosing the Web portal include Yahoo Search, co-branded e-mail, instant messaging, and a customisable personal assistant, which helps users manage e-mail, horoscopes, weather predictions and top news picks, according to Information Week.

The companies will share revenue from both search and display ads, and also other revenue from online commerce.

The agreement is an extension of another 2005 deal. It is not exclusive, which allows Verizon customers to choose other portals, according to Information Week.

Although Yahoo has partnered with several key mobile operators for services, including search and advertising in the United States and Europe, the deal with Verizon, announced Wednesday, does not apply to mobile subscribers. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Verizon Wireless is trying to strike a deal with Google for search and advertising services to its mobile subscribers.

“That report indicated that Google and Verizon Wireless have yet to agree on terms regarding Google's ability to save subscribers' mobile search data. It also indicated that Google search could appear on Verizon's Web portal,” Information Week reported.
