Newspaper insert Islam DVD angers Florida readers

Newspaper insert Islam DVD angers Florida readers

A DVD about radical Islam was included in the Sunday Miami Herald and 70 other newspapers as an advertising insert, and has angered many Muslims in South Florida, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

“We walk a very fine line between ensuring the freedom of expression that we try to uphold at all times and not falling into the process of censorship,” said Alexandra Villoch, senior vice president of advertising at the Miami Herald. “In this case, we reviewed the DVD, the wrapping, the Web site and the materials posted and we opted to not enter into the realm of censorship.”

The hour-long DVD is a preview to the documentary, “Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West,” and was included in newspapers such as The Palm Beach Post and The Sun Sentinel by the Clarion Fund, a non-profit organisation working to promote “national security through education,” the Miami Herald reported. The organisation is sending the preview to about 28 million households in U.S. election swing states such as Florida and Ohio.

The DVD has already been sent out in The St. Petersburg Times, The Florida Times-Union and The News-Press, according to the Miami Herald.

The Miami Herald did not comment on how much the Clarion Fund had paid for the advertising deal, and did not comment further on the issue. The News & Record, in Greensboro, North Carolina, opted not to include the DVD in its paper. Editor John Robinson stated in his blog that it is “divisive and plays on people's fears and served no educational purpose,” the Miami Herald reported.
