The Associated Press announced Thursday that 948 news organisations have joined its Mobile News Network, which reached more than 16 million page views in August, MarketWatch reported.
More than one million local articles on the network were read, and almost 95 percent of the traffic came from Apple's iPhone and iTouch, following the July release of the service.
The Mobile News Network is the first service launched by the AP's Digital Cooperative, which aims to find new digital outlets for content created by the AP's members. Verve Wireless, which offers its technologies to power the Network, permits “content partners to extend their communities and readership onto mobile phones and other network enabled devices,” according to MarketWatch.
“The rapid growth in Mobile News Network participation underscores the newspaper industry's willingness to embrace the changing digital landscape and gives people easy access to the largest source of news from a single mobile application,” said CEO and co-founder of Verve Wireless, Art Howe.
The service will be developed for other devices, such as the BlackBerry, in the near future.
