The East Valley Tribune will lay off 142 people, reduce its publication schedule to four days a week and begin free distribution, due to dwindling advertising and lower readership numbers, the Arizona, United States-based newspaper announced Monday.

As of January, the company said it would end its presence in Scottsdale and Tempe and close its Scottsdale newsroom in order to concentrate on other East Valley areas, the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

This is the third time the newspapers have laid off employees this year, and the current staff cut equals 40 percent of its current employees.

The paper will be delivered on driveways and made accessible in racks four days a week, probably on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Arizona Republic reported.

The Tribune has a paid and free distribution of about 100,000, said Julie Moreno, the Tribune's publisher, according to the Arizona Republic. “We want to preserve this voice for the East Valley and position for success in the future, and we're hopeful these actions will allow us to do that.”

Irvine, California based-Freedom Communications owns the Tribune, along with 110 other newspapers and eight TV stations.
