Facebook, MySpace lead in mobile social networking market

Facebook and MySpace are the most popular mobile social networking sites, according to a survey conducted by ABI Research, CNET reported Monday.

The survey found that 46 percent of the social networking users have visited the sites on a mobile device. Nearly 70 percent of this group visited MySpace on the mobile phone, while 67 percent visited Facebook.

No other social networking sites exceeded the 15 percent mobile adoption, according to CNET.

ABI Research surveyed 500 online social networking users during the second quarter this year.

"There is clearly a large gap between the big two social networks and the others," said Michael Wolf, director at ABI Research, according to a company press release. "This is because consumers do not want to recreate entirely new and separate social networks for mobile, but rather want to tap into their existing social network and have it go with them via the mobile phone."

The study also found that about half of respondents check comments and messages from their friends on social networking sites on a mobile device, while 45 percent usually post status updates.

It should not be a surprise that Facebook and MySpace dominance in the mobile social networking market. According to Hitwise, in United States, Facebook's traffic has risen 50 percent since last August, making up about 21 percent of the market, while MySpace still owns 67.5 percent, according to CNET.
