Independent circulation down 12 percent, other UK titles follow

The Independent's circulation dropped 12.13 percent year-on-year after raising its price and re-launching in full-colour in September, Media Guardian reported Friday.

The newspaper's circulation averages is down to about 220,957 daily. Over the August holiday period, circulation was down 3.95 percent month-on-month according to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

When it relaunched in full-colour in mid-September, the Independent also raised its weekday cover price by 20p, to £1, and its Saturday edition by 10p, to £1.60, Media Guardian reported.

September's circulation numbers for the Independent were 167,092 (with 38,560 in bulk sales) in the United Kingdom, 2,300 in Ireland and 51,548 international copies, according to Media Guardian.

Other year-on-year circulation decreases in the United Kingdom were: the Guardian, down 5.08 percent; the Daily Telegraph, down 4.46 percent; The Times, down 2.51 percent; Financial Times, down 2.68 percent, Media Guardian reported.
