The Web site of the third-largest newspaper in Turkey has been blocked after a court ruled the newspaper had insulted Adnan Oktar, a Turkish writer who disputes the theory of evolution, the Guardian reported Thursday.
Oktar's spokeswoman told the Guardian the Vatan site's comments section included obscenities, which the paper did not remove after Oktar lawyers requested they do so. This is believed to be the first time a major Turkish newspaper's Web site has been blocked. However, about 850 sites are blocked in the country currently.
This is not the first time Oktar, who writes under the name Harun Yahya, has taken action against Web sites.
In April, he took Google Groups to court for libel, which led to it being filtered for awhile. Last month, he caused the Turkish Union of Scientific and Education Workers' site to be blocked. Last year, he was able to get WordPress.com blocked, the Guardian reported.
Of the Vatan's site, Oktar's spokeswoman, Seda Aral, told the Guardian that: "There were swear words and insults no decent person could repeat ... We are trying to protect ourselves. Vatan newspaper is always propagating against Mr. Oktar, and constantly publishes allegations about him. When people read these allegations, they are provoked into using these words and insults against him."
According to a survey by consulting company Millward Brown, Vatan, along with other Turkish newspapers, is trying to preserve market share, Today's Zaman reported.
