Tribune Co. may drop AP

Tribune Co. may end its agreement with the Associated Press, dropping the news wire service at all of its newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times, beginning in October 2010, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday. "... Tribune is evaluating all of its expenses across the company and trying to be more efficient," the company said in a statement.

The U.S. newspaper company notified the AP earlier this week of its decision, as its contract with the news service requires a two years' termination notice. Should Tribune drop the AP, it would be the largest client ever to do so.

"Over the next two years, our newspapers will continue working with AP, but will consider options to the content currently being offered by the news cooperative. The decision will have absolutely no immediate impact on our newspapers," Tribune said in a statement, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Associated Press released a statement saying it understands that difficult economic times mean "a lot of newspapers are re-examining their strategies."
