Koten: Aggregation brings revenue

Koten: Aggregation brings revenue

Magazine publisher Mansueto Ventures cut 20 employees at the beginning of October, mostly from its online department, after putting a lot of work into strengthening its digital side, Forbes reported last week. Why? To break down the wall between its print and digital sides, and to focus on what makes money online, Mansueto CEO John Koten told Forbes.

Aggregation, or social publishing, is what will grow revenues through a recession, Koten told Forbes.com. Mansueto publishes Fast Company and Inc.

“Having regularly updated, fresh content is different than having people who are trying to break stories five or six times a day. I don't really see us as a news-oriented media company at all. With social publishing, you could invest in technology in a way that can help to boost your traffic and on a dollar-for-dollar basis that may be a better investment than investing in originally created content,” Koten said, according to Forbes. “I think social publishing is going to play a bigger and bigger role in journalism whether we professional journalists like it or not ... Our strength is trying to be the spokesman into communities and trying to build a business that works around that.”

To grow the digital side, Koten advises a shift in resources from print to online, because reporters and editors must think about how print content can be leveraged online, Forbes reported.

Koten said he plans to have his staffers create a weekly or monthly report showing what drove traffic for that time period, so everyone knows what users are interested in, as well as listing top 10 stories for each month based on traffic.
