Micro-blogging increasingly popular in Russia

Micro-blogging is gaining popularity in Russia, Kommersant-Vlast reported Monday. The growing interest is not just about finding content produced by celebrities - rather, it is a way to engage in more serious issues, such as the global financial crisis.

The rising appeal of micro-blogging may also be attributed to the tool's format, which permits easier and more rapid access to content than a regular blog, according to Kommersant-Vlast. Furthermore, the tool is accessible from both regular computer as well as a mobile device, which may lead certain users to be more active.

Well-known micro-blogging service Twitter has 1,915 registered users in Russia, according to Kommersant-Vlast. Other sites that the country's Web users are using include the Ukrainian Russian-language platform www.cameraphoner.com, which lets users upload photographs and video clips from their mobile phones. Russian projects feature SMSter (wap:smster.ru) and Mblogi (www.mblogi.ru).
