Low print circulation doesn't mean reach is down

The latest figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations show print circulation is plummeting across the United States; however, newspapers' reach is continuing to grow.

At the Baltimore Sun, for example, the newspaper's print version and Web site reach 53 percent of its market, or about 1.2 million people, according to the ABC, The Sun reported Tuesday.

The Sun's daily circulation dropped5.9 percent to 218,923 in the six months ending Sept. 30, while its Sunday circulation was down 3.9 percent, to 350,640. Meanwhile, its Web site, baltimoresun.com, saw page views increase by 30 percent in that time period, The Sun reported.

Newspaper Web site usage grew 16 percent overall in the third quarter, compared to the same time last year, averaging more than 68 million unique visitors each month, the Seattle Times reported.

“Our total audience is a very stable audience,” said Jill Mackie, a Times spokeswoman.
