Daily Mirror's Scottish office axed to single reporter

The Scottish office of the Daily Mirror, currently comprising four staffers, will be axed to become a single "district reporter" post, All Media Scotland reported.

Publisher Trinity Mirror announced Tuesday in a statement that a total of 11 proposed job redundancies are being discussed across the United Kingdom and their representative body, the British Association of Journalists. The move is “part of the ongoing review of the Daily Mirror's editorial structure,” the publisher stated.

“We are now in a period of consultation with our employees; however, we will continue to try to avoid compulsory redundancies where possible by seeking volunteers and through redeployment,” according to the statement from Trinity Mirror.

Affected reporters include Ron Moore, Maggie Barry and Mark Smith and sports writer, Iain Campbell. The voluntary redundancy terms offered include “three months, plus a week for every year worked,” All Media Scotland reported.

Former Scottish Daily Mirror deputy editor, Shaun Milne, wrote in his blog that he is skeptical about whether sister title the Daily Record will benefit from the decision. “The readers will march headlong first to the Scottish Sun,” he added.

The Scottish Daily Mirror boasted up to 30 staff three years ago, including its last editor, Mike Graham, according to All Media Scotland.

It is unknown whether there will be any changes to sister title the Scottish Sunday Mirror.
