King Features aims to generate cash from funnies

One of the largest comics syndicators in the U.S., used by newspapers nationwide, will launch Comics Kingdom next Tuesday in an effort to generate online revenue for newspaper Web sites, USA Today reported Wednesday.

Hearst-owned King Features Syndicate will unveil the new digital platform newspapers can embed on their sites, which will feature the the company's 10 biggest sellers, such as Blondie, Zits, Baby Blues and Hägar the Horrible.

“On the print side in daily newspapers, the comics are so tight you don't see a lot of advertising adjacencies,” said T.R. “Rocky” Shepard, president of King Features. He hopes that will all change online, where the company's goal is to show at least 60 comic strips along with local and national advertising, as well as animated video in the future, according to USA Today.

Comics Kingdom offers 1,500 strips each day, and also includes a 30-day archive, King Features stated in a Business Wire press release, posted online by MarketWatch.

Users will be able to e-mail comics to drive users back to newspaper Web sites, and will increase “user engagement because users can customise their comics experience” through an interface that “prompts interaction and sharing,” the press release states.
