News International has delayed a plan to redevelop its Wapping site in London due to the economic recession, a spokeswoman said, Reuters reported Wednesday.
News International, which is News Corp.'s UK subsidiary, said in September it would redevelop the site instead of moving to a new location. News International, publisher of The Sun, The Times, News of the World and The Sunday Times, has been based at the 20-acre site since 1986.
According to the plan, other News Corp. businesses, such as MySpace and Dow Jones, would have been joined with the site. News International will continue to design the new building and remove old presses, James Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation Europe and Asia, told staff in a memo, according to Reuters.
“With the low level of visibility we have of the medium term for the business, this is the right thing to do. We will advise you of the likely new timescales when visibility improves,” he added, Reuters reported.
The Independent News & Media group announced Tuesday it will cut jobs at its London-based Independent newspaper and Sunday sister title, a move to reduce costs as ad revenues dropped on a global downturn.
