Cox combines newspaper, TV, radio units

Aiming to create further operational efficiency, Cox Enterprises will combine its newspaper, television and radio holdings into one group, Cox Media Group, Inc., The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

The three units will be separate under the group title, but will be housed under the same corporate roof. The move is hoped to create "efficiencies that allow us to strengthen Cox for the future," Jimmy Hayes, president and chief operating officer of the Atlanta, United States-based Cox Enterprises, said in a statement.

The newspaper unit will house 17 dailies and 26 non-dailies, while the TV unit will house 15 TV stations and the radio unit will contain 86 stations. Cox Media Group will also be home to digital media services, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which is owned by Cox and part of the newspaper unit. Meanwhile, Cox Radio will continue to be a publicly-traded company.

The reorganisation under the Cox Media Group name is slated for completion by January, 2009, Cox said in a statement.

Sandy Schwartz has been named president of the new group, and said the move will also help the company house its digital holdings under one group, which will "ultimately lead to enhanced online and mobile experiences for all our audiences," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Cox is also continuing with plans to sell is coupon company Valpack, which it put on the auction block in August, paidContent reported Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Cox announced it will close its Washington, D.C. bureau and five foreign bureaux.
