DVRs will reach almost half of all U.S. TV households in six years, according to a report from Magna, Media Post reported.
DVR homes will boost to 52.3 million, or 44 percent of all TV households in 2014, from 30.1 million homes, or 27 percent this year. In 2008, the figures grew 22 percent year-over-year.
The study also noted that DVRs will continue eating away total viewing impressions, pegged at 4 percent from 2004 to 2014, for all parts of the day. However, there will be a lift to TV usage during that time.
In recent years, the growth in TV consumption per year has been less than one percent, as the number of TV homes goes up by more than one percent per year. According to the report, "DVR usage will continue to disproportionately target younger target audiences, specifically during prime-time television," Media Post reported.
Other distributed digital platforms will also improve, Magna said. Video on demand-enabled TV households will increase to 68.8 million in 2014, or 57 percent of all TV homes, from 42.1 million, or 37 percent of all TV homes at the end of this year. In 2008, VOD rose 17 percent compared to the previous year.
In addition, broadband access will also increase, from 68.7 million, or 59 percent of all U.S. households at the end of 2008, to 86.2 million, or 70 percent by the end of 2014, according to Media Post.
