Johnston Press to centralise production at 2 Northern Ireland papers

Scotland-based newspaper group Johnston Press is planning to centralise production work for its Northern Ireland titles the Derry Journal and the News Letter. Production would then be done at its Northern Ireland headquarters in Craigavon, BBC News reported Thursday.

The centralisation will lead to eight job cuts in Derry (also called Londonderry).

However, the National Union of Journalists claims that the real number of job cuts throughout Johnston Press's Northern Ireland titles may end up reaching more than 30, the BBC reported.

"Every effort will be made to mitigate the effects of this proposal through redeployment and voluntary redundancies," said a spokeswoman for Johnston Press, according to the BBC.

Johnston Press's other titles in Northern Ireland and Ireland include the Portadown Times, the Londonderry Sentinel and the Donegal Democrat.
