Korean online portals compete for digital maps

Korea's Internet industry is dominated by NHN, which controls almost 80 percent of the search market there, through www.naver.com. But as online map services are still emerging, many smaller players are looking to gain a foothold in the market through innovative mapping services, The Korea Times reported.

Other players are competing using maps to gain an edge; however, NHN CEO Choi Hwi-young recently said the company will unveil its new map services in January or February.

Naver is currently offering "Photo Street," that shows images of main urban areas and even allowing users to call certain businesses via the site's Web phone, The Korea Times reported in an article posted by Asia Media.

"The resolution of photomaps are undoubtedly important, but we are more concerned over how to interweave the maps with our existing services and improve user experience," Choi told The Korea Times.
