Newsquest staffers offer to cut hours

Employees at Newsquest papers in west Wales are offering to work less hours in order to keep their jobs, MediaGuardian reported Thursday.

Members of the National Union of Journalists at the Milford Mercury and Western Telegraph have decided to not take a ballot on industrial action after agreeing to cut their hours. The two papers will merge editorial teams, which would have led to redundancies.

"We have saved a position but it involves four people who were already lowly paid taking home even less," said Lawrence Shaw, the NUJ assistant organiser for Wales, according to MediaGuardian.

Each reporter is expected to lose one day's worth of pay per week.
