Almost 60% of newspapers offer user-generated content

Fifty-eight percent of U.S. dailies have offered some type of user-generated content in the past year, according to research firm the Bivings Group's latest report, paidContent reported Friday.

More newspapers offered a chance for users to comment on stories too, increasing to 75 percent in 2007, more than double the 33 percent in 2006.

However, numbers were lower for newspapers who adopted social networking tools, at 10 percent in 2008, up from 5 percent in 2007, the report found, according to paidContent.

More newspaper Web sites also dropped registration (paid or free) to view most content, as currently just 11 percent require users to register to read complete articles, down from 29 percent in 2007 and 23 percent in 2006, paidContent reported.
